LBC and Absa Bank Kenya Host SME Financing Roundtable for Inaugural Cohort Following Kenya SME Expo

Nairobi, Kenya – In a significant move to bridge the critical financing gap facing Kenyan small and medium enterprises, Lion Brick Capital (LBC), in partnership with Absa Bank Kenya, has convened a high-level SME Financing and Economic Empowerment Roundtable. The event focused on the first cohort of businesses poised to benefit from a structured financial alignment program targeting soft loans, asset financing, and credit facilities.

This initiative follows the recently concluded Kenya SME Expo, which was supported and sponsored by GIZ Kenya. The Expo served as a pivotal platform that connected over 200 exhibitors with significant buyers and investors, creating a pipeline of investment-ready SMEs . The roundtable, held in Nairobi, marked the transition from capacity building to financial connectivity, bringing together a diverse group of over 30 SMEs drawn from the GIZ-trained cohort and LBC’s Omoka na Bishara program. These enterprises, spanning manufacturing, agritech, technology, and 13 other sectors, have undergone rigorous financial readiness training and are now positioned for potential financing.

The session was attended by Adan Hussein Duale, Chair and President of Lion Brick Global, alongside the organization’s Vice President, Regional Director for Africa, and Head of Global Partnerships Mrs. Catherine Kariuki . Representing Absa Bank Kenya were Erastus Muthura, Head of SME Banking, and a team of Relationship Managers. The gathering underscored a shared commitment to empowering SMEs, which form the backbone of Kenya’s economy but often face a financing shortfall estimated at Sh3.3 trillion .

Mr. Erastus Muthura, who has been a vocal advocate for providing more than just financial assistance to SMEs, emphasized the importance of understanding the diverse needs of businesses across various sectors . The event provided a platform for SMEs to engage directly with Absa’s Relationship Managers, outlining their business models and financial needs, with the bank committing to guide them through the process of securing appropriate financing.

Adan Hussein Duale, speaking on behalf of Lion Brick Capital, highlighted the organization’s strategic focus on channeling investment into high-impact sectors to drive economic sovereignty and align with Kenya’s Vision 2030 . The collaboration with Absa Bank, he noted, is a deliberate effort to transform remittance culture into wealth creation by ensuring that capital flows to vetted and trained entrepreneurs.

This partnership leverages the expertise of Absa’s SME Banking services to unlock new opportunities for the businesses .

While no financing was disbursed at the roundtable, the event served as a critical orientation and evaluation phase. The SMEs, which included a significant number from the manufacturing and technology sectors, presented their growth plans and financing requirements. Absa Bank will now undertake a thorough evaluation process to determine the most suitable financial products for each enterprise, ranging from asset financing to working capital solutions . This structured approach aims to ensure that the SMEs are not only financially ready but also sustainably integrated into the formal financial ecosystem, setting the stage for significant economic empowerment and job creation in Kenya.
